Toni Atkins serves as California State Senate President pro Tempore and is a lifelong advocate for LGBTQ+ and women’s issues. She was elected to the San Diego City Council in 2000 and later became the city's interim Mayor. After serving in the state Assembly for four years, Atkins was named Speaker in 2014, making history as the first lesbian in the role. She later ran a successful campaign for state Senate and assumed office in 2016. Two years later, she became Senate President pro Tempore and made history as the first woman and out LGBTQ+ person to lead the Legislature’s upper house. As President pro Tempore, Atkins has championed key legislation on housing, healthcare, and reproductive rights, including the 2022 California Dream for All program.
