Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was first elected to Iceland’s parliament in 1978 and became its longest-serving member. In 2009, she was appointed prime minister, becoming the first out LGBTQ+ person to head a government of any country in the world, as well as Iceland’s first woman prime minister. During her time in the parliament and as prime minister, she was a leading advocate for advancements in LGBTQ+ equality.
