Glen Maxey, an educator and politician, has been a prominent activist and leader in social justice for the past fifty years. In 1986, he gained national attention after successfully opposing the quarantine of individuals with HIV/AIDS in Texas and subsequently founded the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas (now Equality Texas). As its inaugural Executive Director, he advocated for HIV-related legislation and secured state funding for education and treatment. In 1991, Maxey made history as the first out LGBTQ+ person elected to the Texas House of Representatives, sponsoring numerous bills in health and human services during his six-term tenure. Maxey continues his service through his work as a member of the Democratic National Committee.
