First elected to the New York City Council in 1999, Christine Quinn passionately advocated for LGBTQ+ equality, equal access to city services, housing services, health care services and security and more. She was chosen by her colleagues to be Speaker of the Council in 2006, becoming the first woman and first out LGBTQ+ speaker in city history. During her time as Speaker, Christine championed LGBTQ+ issues, including pushing the New York Senate to pass marriage equality in 2009, vowing that her and her partner would not get married until they did so. Since leaving the City Council due to term limits, Christine has continued to advocate for expanding LGBTQ+ rights and expanding city services
