Annise Parker became the first out LGBTQ+ person elected in Houston when she won a runoff election for an at-large city council seat in 1997. She would serve three terms until being elected the city controller in 2003, where she also served three terms. In 2010, Parker was elected mayor of Houston, becoming the first out LGBTQ+ person ever elected mayor of a major American city. That year, TIME Magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Parker served three two-year terms as mayor and was termed out in 2016. She now serves as President & CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund and LGBTQ+ Victory Institute.
